According to UNAIDS, Thailand's sex industry is widespread, contributing to over 3 million visits to sex workers annually. While men might claim they’re “just having a beer” or “playing golf,” the reality is that many of these bars are staffed with prostitutes. The “bar fine” system—where a customer pays a fee to take a bar girl out for the night—is incredibly common.

Beyond the bars, nightclubs are another hotspot for infidelity, where ‘freelancers’—prostitutes who operate independently—often approach foreign men. STIs, such as the antibiotic-resistant “super gonorrhoea,” have also been rising, fueled by unprotected encounters with sex workers, as reported by the NYPost. The risks of contracting and spreading diseases through sexual tourism are higher than many people realise, especially when foreign men demand unprotected services from sex workers.
